Product description

Snoring mouth guards for use with tongue base snoring or position-dependent breathing stops at night.

How does a mandibular advancement device (“snoring mouth guard”) work?

Snoring noises, but also night-time breathing stops (“apnoea”), occur when the tissue in the upper airways relaxes and goes limp during sleep.

In a lot of cases, this relaxation causes the tongue to slip backwards into the throat when sleeping on one’s back, causing the airways there to be constricted or even temporarily closed. Air turbulence and vibrations occur at the constriction points, and this is what causes snoring noises. If the airways are completely closed off, this leads to breathing stops.

A mandibular advancement device such as the somnipax guard (standard / large) is a very effective way of preventing the tongue from slipping back into the throat while sleeping.

How does it work? By moving the lower jaw forwards by a few millimetres, therefore applying a slight tension to the tongue muscle. This slight tension means that the tongue muscle is no longer able to drop backwards into the throat. The airways remain free, and you will be able to sleep without any dangerous breathing interruptions or annoying snoring noise.

The somnipax guard standard is for small to medium-sized jaws

The somnipax guard large is for large jaws

The upper jaw section is adapted to the shape of the upper teeth and the lower jaw section to the lower teeth.

Connection using the bands

The two mouth guard sections are connected using the advancement band. This guarantees the necessary advancement while also allowing for the slight opening of the jaw and making sure that the lower jaw can be moved from side to side.

The advancement can be easily regulated with a high level of flexibility using the 8 different band lengths:
somnipax guard standard: from a neutral jaw position (0 mm) to a advancement of 12 mm.
somnipax guard large: from a negative jaw position (-1 mm) to a advancement of 9.5 mm.

Application

Snoring can have a variety of causes. A lot of products such as nasal dilators or plasters are only effective if the snoring is caused by not taking in enough air through the nose. If these products do not work for you, you may be suffering from constricted airways in the throat area. The somnipax guard (standard / large) helps with precisely this issue. Constricted airways don't just occur when you're sleeping on your back; they can be position-dependent too. And the somnipax guard (standard / large) can help stop this type of snoring too. The anti-snoring mouth guard is therefore also a suitable option if the problem cannot be resolved by means of positional therapy (e.g. using an anti-snoring T-shirt, an anti-snoring rucksack or a special pillow). If your snoring is not down to reduced nasal breathing or constricted airways in the throat area, it could be caused by vibrating tissue in the palate area. This occurs as a result of breathing through an open mouth at night. In this case, you should consider an anti-snoring mouthpiece rather than the anti-snoring mouth guard. This is better suited to the prevention of vibrating tissue.

Sizing instructions

To find out whether the somnipax guard standard or the somnipax guard large is the right choice for you, simply click on the ruler symbol above the "Add to cart" field. You will then be shown some instructions for working out the size of your jaw. Once you have these values, you can then use the enclosed table to work out which of the items is right for you. The somnipax guard standard is suitable for small and medium-sized jaws, while the somnipax guard large is the better choice for large jaws.

Instructions for use

The somnipax guard (standard / large) anti-snoring mouth guard may not be suitable for you if you:
  • have a removable full or partial denture or if you have fewer than 10 fixed teeth per jaw.
  • suffer from jaw pain, loose teeth, serious gum or jaw joint disease or other jaw complaints.
  • wear braces.
  • have gum loss or an unstable bite.
  • suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding).
  • are under 18 years of age.
If one or more of these apply, please consult your dentist or contact us before purchasing.

Instruction manual

The customisation of the mandibular advancement device is done in the comfort of your own home and is limited to a few simple steps: Heat up a water bath and wait for it to reach the ideal temperature (a thermometer is included to help measure the temperature). Then place the upper jaw section of the mouth guard into the hot water bath for three minutes. After three minutes, remove the mouth guard with a spoon, and shake off the water. Then place the mouth guard onto the upper dental arch, and press it securely into position using the bite plate. Please note: before inserting the mouth guard, always check that it is not too hot and that it will not burn your mouth! Repeat this process with the lower jaw section of the mouth guard. You can then attach one of the advancement bands to the two sections to adjust the advancement – the shorter the band, the larger the advancement.
You can repeat the adjustment process multiple times. To do so, the mouth guard should initially be warmed up just like for a normal adjustment process, and the previous imprints carefully levelled back out using the fingers. It can then be re-adjusted.
Here you will find detailed instructions for use of the somnipax guard (standard / large) MAD.
