Affordable snoring mouth guards for beginners: The 2 most popular devices

Are you and your partner being deprived of sleep due to your snoring? A snoring mouth guard could be the solution to your problems. We’ve put the two most popular of the affordable entry-level models to the test to advise you on which is the most suitable model for your needs.

What the two entry-level models have in common

Our test focuses on the SomnoGuard 3 and the ZQuiet. These models have two key things in common: Priced at between £46 and £60, they are comparably affordable and consist of a single component. Unlike more expensive two-component models, they do not allow any lateral jaw movement.

SomnoGuard 3: German engineering for peaceful nights

The SomnoGuard 3 from German manufacturer Tomed is probably the more well-known of the two mouth guards under review. In this model, the protrusion is set during the adjustment process. The user pushes his or her lower jaw forwards and bites down into the heated plastic material. The mouth guard can only be re-adjusted by repeating the heating process, which is a general drawback of single-component boil-and-bite mouth guards. With two-component boil-and-bite mouth guards (such as the somnipax guard), the protrusion is usually set once the mouth guard has been adapted to the user’s teeth. This means that the protrusion can be altered quickly without having to repeat the adjustment process.

The crucial difference between this and other mouth guards is the retaining grooves in the inner ledge. These ensure a much more secure fit, but also mean that there is more material in the mouth. Despite this, the mouth guard is still very comfortable, not least thanks to the high-quality, tasteless plastic.

The small breathing hole in the SomnoGuard 3 ensures that mouth breathing is at least restricted.

ZQuiet: the simple alternative for mouth-breathers

ZQuiet

The Zquiet follows a completely different approach. This North American snoring mouth guard differs from the SomnoGuard 3 in three key ways:

  • It is specifically designed for mouth-breathing. It therefore has a very open design in comparison with the SomnoGuard 3.
  • It does not need to be adapted to the user’s teeth. The plastic is soft enough that it can be inserted without the need for any additional steps. Important: The mouth guard can also be heated in hot water for even better adaptation to the teeth (also mentioned in the instructions for use).
  • There are two versions of the Zquiet, each with a different fixed protrusion stage: one with a protrusion of approx. 2 mm (mouth guard 1) and one with a protrusion of approx. 6 mm (mouth guard 2). The two mouth guard versions can be purchased together in the starter set, or separately as a refill pack.

Which snoring mouth guard is right for you – our recommendations:

  • The SomnoGuard 3 is particularly suitable if you’re looking for a secure fit. The excellent instructions make the adjustment process really simple.
  • The ZQuiet is recommended for mouth-breathers and anyone looking for a ready-to-use solution. Important tip: Despite the promise of being “ready-to-use”, heating up the mouth guard to adjust it can make it even more comfortable.
