What you should also know about our MAD comparison:
Comfort
Material-saving construction, pressure distribution through a well-thought-out design, and precise adjustment options are decisive for comfort.
Usage
For simple usage, it should be possible for the adjustment process to be completed in a few steps, which can be repeated several times, and are not be prone to error. In this case, aids such as thermometers for measuring the correct water temperature are helpful regarding the heating up of a MAD. Regrading easy-to-use MADs, it should be possible to adjust the mandibular advancement quickly and precisely. While MADs, such as ZQuiet, which do not require adjustment, are particularly easy to use, they do, however, reduce the comfort.
Cleaning
Basic cleaning requires that all parts of the MAD are easily accessible for cleaning purposes (no angles or hard-to-reach spots). MADs should never be cleaned with toothpaste or denture cleaners. Instead, MADs should be cleaned with mouthwash or special dental prosthesis cleaners, such as Curaprox BDC 100 / 105 or the BonyPlus cleaning tabs.
Suitability
MADs are especially effective when you exclusively, or predominantly, snore while sleeping on your back. Due to the gravitational force, the base of the tongue slides back into the throat while lying on one’s back and narrows or even blocks the airways. MADs are inserted into the mouth and advance the mandible slightly; this means they push/pull the lower jaw forward. This places the muscles in the base of the tongue and throat under slight tension, and keeps the airways open. Some MADs, such as the SnorBan, prevent you from breathing through your mouth while you are asleep, and, thus, also have the advantage of preventing open mouth snoring. However, such MADs do require clear nasal passages.
Mandibular Advancement
The mandibular advancement of MADs usually lies between 0 and 10 mm; in the case of SomnoFit S, even between 0 and 12 mm. The advancement is mostly adjusted in steps of approximately 1-2 mm or continuously adjusted, in the case of infinitely adjustable MADs. A finer adjustability results in higher precision and comfort. An adjustability in steps of 1-2 mm is, however, completely sufficient.
Jaw Sizes
MADs regularly come in one size. This, however, varies depending on the MAD. SomnoFit S, for instance, is more suitable for smaller jaws, whereas SomnoFit, for example, is more suitable for larger jaws. Thus, please note our size specifications.
Moulding/Adjusting to the Bite
Most MADs can be heated in a water bath, followed by custom-moulding them to your bite. This can be easily done and can generally be repeated several times. The advantage: Significantly higher comfort. MADs for newcomers, such as ZQuiet, forgo this customisability in favour of a fast and even simpler use.
Lateral Jaw Movement
Most MADs also facilitate lateral jaw movement. This reduces the risk of temporomandibular joint disorder.
Lifespan
The information on the average lifespan is based on our experience. Based on our experience, bruxism / teeth grinding and insufficient / improper care (especially with when cleaned with toothpaste) considerably shorten the average lifespan of a MAD. Thus, please note our cleaning instructions for the respective product.
The above information is based on numerous data sources, especially the manufacturer’s specifications and our many years of experience with thousands of MAD buyers.
