Why Harvard and the US health authorities strongly recommend the regular cleaning of CPAP masks
Leading US medical centres such as Harvard, Mayo and Cornell and US health authorities the FDA and CDC emphatically warn against neglecting the cleaning of CPAP masks and devices. They say that these masks and devices need to be regularly cleaned.
Dr. Epstein from the Harvard University medical faculty sounded the alarm back in 2019: “The mask sits on the face, in contact with organisms on the skin. Over time, bacteria and oils on a dirty mask may give you a rash or infection on the skin.” US health authority the FDA therefore strongly advises that users clean their CPAP masks and devices.
The world-famous Mayo Clinic states another reason for this; namely the snug fit of the mask. The airways only remain free if the mask is perfectly in place, creating an air-tight seal. But if oils and greases collect on the mask cushion, this can easily cause it to slip.
