What you need to know about our snoring mouth guard test:
Comfort
Comfort is one of the most important selection criteria. The comfort of the mouth guard depends in particular on the key factors of material-efficient and sophisticated design that ensures good pressure distribution, as well as precise adjustment options. Two-component snoring mouth guards such as the somnipax guard S tend to be more comfortable than single-component models (such as the SomnoGuard 3). This is because these models allow for lateral movement of the jaw.
Use
To ensure ease of use, the adjustment process should involve only a few steps and should not be prone to user error, and it should be possible to repeat the process multiple times. Tools such as thermometers can help with this, as they make it possible to achieve the correct water temperature (this is included with the somnipax guard S and the somnipax guard, for example). With an easy-to-use mouth guard, it should be possible to set the mouth guard protrusion quickly and precisely. Mouth guards such as ZQuiet, which do not require adjustment, are particularly easy to use, but should therefore be assumed to be less comfortable.
Cleaning
In order to ensure simple cleaning, all of the components of a snoring mouth guard need to be easily accessible (no corners or hard-to-access places). Snoring mouth guards should never be cleaned with toothpaste or denture cleaners. Instead, snoring mouth guards should be cleaned using a mouth rinse or specific snoring mouth guard cleaners such as Curaprox BDC 100 / 105 or the BonyPlus cleaning tablets.
Suitability
Snoring mouth guards are particularly effective if you only, or predominantly, snore when lying on your back. When sleeping on your back, gravity causes the base of your tongue to slip back towards your throat, which can restrict or close off your airways. Snoring mouth guards are worn in the mouth an push the lower jaw slightly forwards. This puts the muscles in the base of your tongue and throat under slight tension, keeping the airway in your throat free. Single-component snoring mouth guards such as SnorBan also tend to restrict mouth breathing when asleep. This has the advantage of also preventing mouth snoring (i.e. snoring due to an open mouth). These types of mouth guards do however require the user to have effective nasal breathing.
Protrusion
Two-component snoring mouth guards can be adjusted with a lot more precision and flexibility compared to single-component models. This is because the protrusion is usually only set AFTER the device itself has been adjusted (e.g. using a screw system such as that seen in the SomnoGuard AP 2). With single-component snoring mouth guards, the protrusion is set during the adjustment of the device (by stretching the lower jaw forwards to more or less of an extent). This does not allow for precise protrusion adjustment. To change the protrusion in single-component mouth guards, the adjustment process needs to be repeated from scratch.
Jaw sizes
Size: Snoring mouth guards are regularly only available as one-size-fits-all models. The particular size, however, differs depending on the device. The somnipax guard S, for example, is designed for smaller jaws, and the somnipax guard for larger jaws.
We therefore recommend checking the sizing by carrying out the following steps: Bite down onto a clean piece of cardboard and measure the width of the impression from the outer side of your back right tooth to the outer side of your back left tooth. Compare the measured width with the specified information regarding the width of the mouth guard. The specified mouth guard width should be at least one millimetre larger than the measured width of the impression.
Adjusting to your teeth
Adjustability: Most snoring mouth guards can be warmed up in a water bath and then adjusted to your teeth. This is easy to do, and the process can usually be repeated multiple times. The benefit: a much more comfortable fit. Some entry-level mouth guards such as the ZQuiet do not have this adjustability, opting instead for a design that allows for quicker and more simple use.
Service life
The average service life information provided here is based on our empirical values. In our experience, teeth grinding and insufficient or incorrect care (particularly toothpaste) reduce the average service life of a snoring mouth guard. Therefore, please always observe our cleaning instructions for the relevant products.
This information is based on numerous data sources, and in particular on the specifications of the manufacturers and our many years of experience with thousands of buyers of snoring mouth guards.
